He has written books on Andrei Bely, Vladimir Nabokov, and Leo Tolstoy, and published numerous articles on various other Russian writers and topics. His new book, The Black Russian, is a biography of the remarkable Frederick Bruce Thomas, a forgotten African-American who was born to former slaves in Mississippi in 1872 and who went on to become a millionaire impresario in pre-Revolutionary Moscow and was the first to bring jazz to Constantinople.
