A graduate of Harvard Law School, Michael Chertoff was a federal prosecutor and practicing attorney for many years. In 2001, he was the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division of the US Justice Department. In that position he played a major role in the response to September 11 and in fashioning the counterterrorism strategy after that attack. He also supervised the Computer Crime section of the Justice Department.
From 2003-2005, he was a federal appeals court judge on the US Third Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2005, he was confirmed as the nation’s second US Secretary of Homeland Security. During his four years of service he led our national counterterrorism effort and dealt with all manner of critical infrastructure protection. He also supervised our cyber response strategy, worked with intelligence agencies, and was one of the architects of our national cyber security strategy.
